What is Zepbound?

Zepbound is a once-weekly injection approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition. Its active ingredient is tirzepatide, the same medicine in Mounjaro. Tirzepatide activates two hormone receptors: GIP and GLP-1.
Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) activates only the GLP-1 receptor. In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, people on tirzepatide lost an average of 20.2% of their body weight over 72 weeks, compared with 13.7% on semaglutide. Zepbound is also FDA-approved to treat moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.

What is the Zepbound dosing schedule?
Start low.
Build gradually.
Zepbound is taken once a week as an injection under the skin. Your CNL provider guides each dose increase to balance results with side effects.
Weeks 1–4
Your starting dose. It lets your body adjust and is not meant for long-term weight loss on its own.
Weeks 5–8
First dose increase. Many patients notice stronger appetite control at this stage.
Month 3 and Beyond
Your dose can increase by 2.5 mg after at least 4 weeks on each step, up to 10, 12.5, or 15 mg. Your provider sets the pace based on your response and how you feel.
Injection tip: Zepbound can be injected into the lower abdomen, upper thigh, or back of the upper arm. Rotate injection sites with each dose. Your CNL provider will walk you through the process at your consultation.

What are the side effects of Zepbound?
What to expect
as you start.
Most side effects are digestive. They are most common during dose increases and usually ease as your body adjusts. Starting low and increasing gradually helps.
If you have severe or persistent symptoms, contact your CNL provider. We monitor your progress and adjust your plan as needed.
Contact your provider immediately if you experience:

How much does Zepbound cost through CNL Medical?
Your screening is free. The initial consultation is $150 and is charged only if you qualify and a prescription is sent. Follow-up visits are $100. Medication is paid separately: through your insurance if your plan covers it (as low as $25 a month with Lilly’s savings card for eligible patients), or through LillyDirect self-pay starting at $299 a month. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for consultation fees.
Does insurance cover Zepbound?
It depends on your plan. Many plans that cover Zepbound require prior authorization and documentation of your BMI and weight-related conditions. We check your coverage during your free screening and handle the prior authorization for you.
How much weight can I lose on Zepbound?
In the SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, adults taking the 15 mg dose lost an average of about 21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, compared with about 3% on placebo. Participants also followed a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual results vary.
Is Zepbound better than Wegovy?
In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, people taking tirzepatide (Zepbound) lost an average of 20.2% of their body weight over 72 weeks, compared with 13.7% on semaglutide (Wegovy). How quickly does Zepbound start working?
Many people notice less appetite within the first few weeks. Weight loss is gradual because the dose increases step by step over several months. In clinical trials, weight loss continued through 72 weeks of treatment.
Is compounded tirzepatide the same as Zepbound?
No. Zepbound is FDA-approved and made by Eli Lilly. Compounded tirzepatide is prepared by a compounding pharmacy and is not FDA-approved, which means the FDA has not reviewed it for safety, effectiveness, or quality. Your CNL provider will discuss it only if it is clinically appropriate for you.
Do I need to stay on Zepbound long-term?
Zepbound is approved for chronic weight management. In the SURMOUNT-4 trial, people who stopped tirzepatide regained much of the weight they had lost, while those who continued kept losing. Your provider will talk with you about a long-term plan.

Important Safety Information
Zepbound® (tirzepatide) is a prescription medicine for chronic weight management in certain adults and for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
Boxed Warning: In rat studies, Zepbound caused thyroid tumors, including cancer. It is not known whether it causes these tumors in people. Do not use Zepbound if you or a family member have had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Serious side effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems from dehydration, low blood sugar, and serious allergic reactions. The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. Zepbound may make birth control pills less effective and should not be used during pregnancy.
