Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in products like Latisse, is a topical prostaglandin. It has the effect of enhancing eyelash growth. When applied topically to the base of the eyelashes, it can stimulate longer, thicker, and darker eyelash growth.

In one study, there was about a 20% improvement in eyelash length and darkness and over 100% improvement in eyelash fullness after people used bimatoprost (Latisse) for 4 months.

Bimatoprost works on eyelashes by extending their growth cycle and increasing the number of hairs that grow. Here’s how it works:

  1. Prolongs the Anagen Phase: The hair growth cycle has different phases, with the anagen phase being the active growth period. Bimatoprost extends this phase, allowing your eyelashes to grow for a more extended period before naturally shedding.
  2. Increases Hair Density: By extending the growth phase and stimulating the hair follicles, Bimatoprost can increase the density of your eyelashes. This means that you may have more eyelash hairs growing simultaneously.
  3. Darkens and Thickens Lashes: Bimatoprost also has the effect of making eyelashes darker and thicker. This contributes to the appearance of more prominent and attractive eyelashes.

The typical dose is 1 drop on the upper eyelid of each eye once per night. For each eye, use a new, clean applicator to apply the drop along the eyelid where your eyelashes grow out from.

Before using bimatoprost (Latisse) each night, wash your face with soap and water. Make sure your face is clean and you’ve taken off any makeup.

If you wear contact lenses, take them out before using bimatoprost (Latisse) every night. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the medication to put your lenses back into your eye(s). Bimatoprost (Latisse) can change the color of your lenses if you reinsert them too soon.

Only apply bimatoprost (Latisse) to the upper eyelids. Don’t apply on your lower eyelashes or in your eye. But if any medication accidentally gets into your eye, it’s not harmful so you don’t need to rinse your eye with water. Blot any extra solution that gets outside the upper eyelid with a tissue or cloth.

Don’t let the tip of the bottle touch anything other than a new, clean applicator. This helps prevent the medication from getting contaminated with germs and lower your risk for eye infection.

Applying bimatoprost (Latisse) more than once per day or using more drops per dose won’t make your eyelashes grow any faster or longer. Use bimatoprost (Latisse) exactly as prescribed to avoid wasting the medication.

If you forget to use bimatoprost (Latisse) one night, just skip it. Apply the medication the next evening.

Like any medication, Bimatoprost may have side effects. Common side effects can include:

  1. Eye Irritation: Some users may experience itching, redness, or burning in the eyes. This can typically be alleviated by using as directed and not applying it to the lower eyelashes or getting it into the eyes.
  2. Darkening of the Iris: In rare cases, bimatoprost has been associated with an increase in the pigmentation of the iris (the colored part of the eye). This side effect is more common in people with mixed-color irises, such as blue-brown or green-brown, and is more often seen in long-term users. It’s important to discuss this potential risk with your healthcare provider.
  3. Darkening of the Skin: Bimatoprost may cause darkening of the skin on the eyelid or the area under the eyes. This side effect is generally reversible when the medication is discontinued.
  4. Redness and Dryness of the Eyelids: Some people may experience redness and dryness on the eyelids.
  5. Unwanted Hair Growth: Bimatoprost can sometimes promote hair growth in unintended areas where it comes into contact with the skin. This might include hair growth on the cheek if it accidentally gets on the skin.
  6. Allergic Reactions: In rare cases, allergic reactions to bimatoprost can occur, leading to symptoms such as swelling, itching, or redness. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
